What damage does a driver insurance cover?

The driver's insurance compensates the physical injury to the driver in accidents of all kinds:

  • an accident where the driver is at fault,
  • when getting in and out if the vehicle for loading, unloading or refuelling,
  • while providing assistance to road casualties or a breakdown vehicle,
  • carjacking,
  • etc.

This insurance not only covers medical and hospitalisation costs (after the intervention of the health insurance fund), but also provides an income guarantee in the event of incapacity for work or invalidity. It also offers compensation if the driver dies in the accident.

A driver insurance is therefore a very useful extension of your civil liability insurance and comprehensive insurance, which do not cover physical injury to the driver.

It is therefore also advisable for an independent entrepreneur with a company car to take out such an insurance.

Is a driver insurance necessary for employees who use a company vehicle for the performance of their job?

If one of your employees is on the road with a company vehicle for work and is involved in an accident, this is considered to be an occupational accident. In that case, the legally required occupational accident insurance applies for the physical damage of the driver, and a driver insurance is superfluous.

In order to avoid double coverage, it is therefore important to check which policy (policies) may already include physical damage to your employees.

Through my employer, I enjoy the use of a company car that I use both professionally and privately. How can I know if, as a driver, I’m insured for physical damage?

It’s the employer who must provide the necessary insurance for company cars. It is therefore best to find out from him which insurance policies have been taken out. From a legal point of view, the employer is only obliged to take out civil liability insurance for the car. A comprehensive insurance, driver insurance or assistance insurance are additional cover that the employer can provide.

Do you not benefit from driver insurance through your employer, but you would still like to be covered for physical damage in an accident? Then you can have this insured through a traffic policy.
